Epworth Sleepiness Scale

Epworth Sleepiness Scale

This self-assessment helps identify your level of daytime sleepiness using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a widely used screening tool. Your responses reflect how likely you are to fall asleep in common situations. While this tool does not provide a diagnosis, it may help indicate whether further evaluation for sleep disorders is appropriate.

How to complete this form:

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to just feeling tired? Answer according to your usual way of life. If you haven’t done some of these things recently, estimate how they would affect you. You should not have had caffeine in the previous 24 hours.

3. Sitting, inactive in a public place (e.g., a theater or a meeting)*
4. As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break*
5. Lying down to rest in the afternoon while circumstances permit*
6. Sitting and talking to someone*
7. Sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol*
8. In a car or bus, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic*

General Guidance:

Scores above 10: Any score of 11 or higher is considered abnormal and suggests excessive daytime sleepiness. It may be caused by sleep disorders, medication side effects, medical or psychiatric conditions, or lifestyle factors. Further evaluation by a healthcare provider is recommended.

Scores 0–10: Generally considered within the normal range, but if you still experience significant sleepiness or fatigue, it may be worth discussing with your doctor.

Note: The ESS is not a diagnostic tool, but a screening measure used to help identify people who may need further evaluation for sleep disorders or other causes of excessive sleepiness.

If you are concerned about your score or experience persistent daytime sleepiness, talk to your healthcare provider.

Your Results

Your Score Suggests: Low Daytime Sleepiness

A score of 0 to 5 suggests a low level of normal daytime sleepiness. Most individuals in this range are not considered abnormally sleepy. If you are not experiencing excessive fatigue or drowsiness during the day, no further evaluation is typically needed.

Your Score Suggests: Normal but Noticeable Sleepiness

Your score indicates a higher, but still within normal, level of daytime sleepiness. This is typical for healthy adults. However, if your sleepiness interferes with daily activities or feels excessive, you may want to discuss it with a healthcare provider.

Your Score Suggests: Mild Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

This score may reflect insufficient sleep, lifestyle choices, or the early signs of a sleep disorder. If you regularly feel tired or drowsy during the day, a medical consultation could help identify contributing factors or the need for a sleep study.

Your Score Suggests: Moderate Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

Daytime sleepiness at this level often impacts work, safety, and relationships. This could be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder such as mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We recommend discussing these results with a sleep-trained medical or dental provider.

Your Score Suggests: Severe Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

This level of sleepiness is considered clinically significant and may be linked to serious sleep disorders such as severe obstructive sleep apnea or narcolepsy. Prompt evaluation is strongly recommended. Please consult a healthcare provider for further testing and treatment options.
